Richard Nieuwenhuis

For twenty-two years Rich was the owner and operator of Boslands Flower Shop and Greenhouses.  Rich and his wife Trudy bought the flower shop in 1980 and developed it into an extremely successful operation.  The greenhouses provide a wide variety of flowering plants and cut flowers.  Since Rich and Trudy began, the flower shop has been designated as one of the Top 250 FTD Flower Shops in the United States for many years running.  In 2004 the flower shop and greenhouse business was sold.  Rich relocated to White Township in Warren County and started a new wholesale greenhouse business.  Scenic Valley Greenhouses LLC specialize in flowering plant production, selling to independent garden centers.

Rich has been a member of the Passaic County Board of Agriculture since 1990.  Rich served as the Director from Passaic County to the New Jersey Farm Bureau Board of Directors since 1996.  While a member of the board, he held positions on both the finance and insurance committees.  He served as NJFB first vice president before being elected president in 2002.

Rich was appointed to the State Board of Agriculture by Governor Whitman in 1994, and served as its president in 1997-98.  He chaired both the nominating committee and the committee to revise the New Jersey Right to Farm Act.

Rich has also been active in several other organizations and activities including: serving as a Trustee, Vice president and President of the New Jersey State Florists' Association; serving on the Advisory Board of First Pioneer Farm Credit; serving as a trustee and an officer of the New Jersey Agriculture Society; and serving as chairman of the Passaic County Agriculture Development Board.
